Using the Hall carts

I have just got out the Hall carts, and three of them have broken in one day of use. I have the students at their tables and the carts fall off. A suggestion might be to work on the floor.

I met with Rick, Cindy, Maggie and Gigi on Friday to talk about this summer, here is what came from it.
1. Gigi Richard will focus on natural disasters, hurricanes, volcanoes earthquakes and more as a topic for our course.
2. There are 15 people enrolled in the science side.
3. Heidi and I will be leading the teaching side
4. The on-line part might be a piece of non-fiction literature like John Mcphee's Control of Nature

As posted, our class dates are set as is our topic. Earth Science. I am meeting with Rick this week to nail down more details and get the rest of the supplies so I can get them out. I still do not know who the prof will be. One thing I got from the conference was that it is a good thing have the content and pedagogy people working closely together, and I hope to start meeting with the content person as soon as possible. I am open to ideas and hope you all feel comfortable expressing your thoughts to me, so let me know what you want. My plans right now are inquiry instruction and field trips targeted for specific big ideas in Earth Science, (for example superposition). As always, let me know. I will be going to Fort Collins, on Thursday night for state Science Fair, other that that I plan on being around.

Hey Folks
Listening to a Georgia group who are doing the same grant we have. Their district requires pre and post assessments every 3 weeks. I am picking up some good ideas, so far I have some texts for this summer and am planning on teaching using interactive notebooks. I also hope to meet with the prof early and often to help structure our class. I also plan on a focus on inquiry based and maybe Project based learning.

I hope to layout expectations early. If you have anything that you should have known sooner, let me know. I also want to have more of a hand in the on-line class. I am leaning toward making the on-line content rather than pedagogy.

If you know anyone who is interested, please encourage them to apply. Jen Richter is not planning to be with us, and Jim Smyth might be back, I don't know. How many of you are planning on returning?

Well about 8 of us are participating in the on line discussion group. I am getting a lot out of hearing other peoples idea and perspectives. Rick and I are going to the city of big shoulders, slaughter house to the world, Chicago. to be a part of the national convention for other MS3 types. Who would have thunk it.

Once I get permission, I will post the address to this blog.

I expect the rest of the kits to get in any day and will let everyone know when to expect the materials.

I will be using this as a way of communicating about the program. Especially for those of you out side of the district.

Hopefully everyone is registered for the on-line course, if not e-mail me at mwarner@mesastate.edu and I will help you with that.

We built kits and you should have them if you were there, I was not so as soon as I find out what happened I will be able to help.

we will order the missing equipment ASAP and get that out to you. Sara, you are our contact with the out of town three. I want to use the kit a lot between now and the capstone and share ideas. I will try to get pic and video. I hope everyone will try out as many labs as possible.

The Capstone is June 1,2 and 3. I plan to revisit the kits and look at what changed should be made to them, and we will walk the math people through some of the investigations.

Rick and I are going to Chicago to attend the National Conference of people who lead MS3 grants, April 1-3. I hope to come back with lots of ideas.

This summer will be Earth Science, we do not have a prof yet, but Rick is working on it. I talked with a couple of you about what you would like to see, I know I want some field trips, let me know if there is something you would really benefit from.

Once again, I am proven right.

It has been a long time since anyone has accused me of have poor self-esteem, so at the risk of sounding even more arrogant, I am good. Actually, we are good. Which I have predicted. My prediction, maybe even hypothesis, is if you give teachers a job, time and resources, then get out of the way, great things will occur. Take this week-end for example, although I had to leave at noon to go the the wrestling tournament, I know my group of teachers produced great things. I helped get them started, shared with them what I would like to see happen, listened to them and gave them the help they need. No protocols, whip-arounds or gallery walks. The secret ingredient here is time. I tried to value their time and I trusted that they would act like professionals. The result is our output way exceeded expectations.

Our Weekend!

Well aside from the fact I completed fouled up the Saturday afternoon, I am happy with our class this last weekend. Sorry about the LED thing and Andrew and I guessed that the Version 0.2 of the whiteboard software might work better and that is indeed true. I would like to work more with the great folks at the Math and Science center and use this class as a way to help.

Text and Notes to ipod

It has been covered elsewhere but I wanted to jot down my way of getting text documents onto the ipod. First you must enable disk use on the first window that pops up when you sync.

When this is done you can open your ipod using windows explorer

Save your Word documents as plain text the save it in the notes folder.

If you have a document with lots of images you can use a free program called Paperless Printer, which allows you to print (save) a word document as a JPEG file (picture) to your picture folder. The next time you sync your ipod the document will be in the pictures on your ipod.

Hey MS3ers

The presentation is at the bottom of the post so you have to wade through to get to it. I have remotely disabled your scroll keys so you have to read it all. Don't believe me? Go ahead try. Okay so I didn't disable anything, please read anyway.

What a week! I have had a great time and I really like how our learning is coming together. I will still try (and undoubtedly fail) to balance interest, rigor, need and time. Thank you all for you willingness to jump into this set of skills I am still trying to master and yet have the nerve enough to teach you.

I am amazed at where we are compared to Monday. Special thanks to my henchwoman Heidi who always has the attitude, "if I don't know it , I can figure it out" and for her really creative ideas.

Please keep up the positive attitudes for the rest of our time. I almost feel guilty for taking money to work with you. Almost.

Go forth and do good things.

TECHNOLOGY USES FOR YOUR CLASSROOM FOR THIS SCHOOL YEAR!!!
1. Create a “homepage” under www.blogger.com or www.edublogs.org and introduce yourself to your students during the first week.
2. Have a place on your blog for each class or “Notes”, “Future Assignments”, “8th grade team”, “expectations”, “links”, etc.
3. Create a survey to get to know your learners the first week of school. www.Surveymonkey.com
4. Have this replace your traditional “handouts”.
5. Use part of blog for your science behavior contract “signatures”!
6. Have students “turn in” their homework digitally during the first week. Use this as their first week grade! (just think, they can’t lose this homework, the dog can’t eat it, and you don’t have to worry about late assigments.)
7. Introduce yourself (videotaping with your webcam), edit it through www.teachertube .com and load it to your blog or wiki for students and parents to meet you during the first week of school.
8. Have a tab under your wiki or blog for your Sub plans.
9. Set up a wiki for your first class project.
10. Have a tab for “Essential Learnings” for you grade, team, class, etc.
11. Smile cause you are now one of the TECH experts at your school. . . . . just don’t let it be known to your staff!!!!!

• LoggerPro Light Introduction- This is the software that goes with Vernier
equipment you are using already.
• Time to experiment with this program.

3. With partners:
a.Create a lab that demonstrates the 4 basics of Ch.1,2,3.
i. Acceleration
ii. Velocity
iii. Distance
iv. Free Fall (gravity)
b. Write this lab up in a word document and include the following parts:
i. Purpose
ii. Materials
iii. Procedure
iv. Teacher Comments (how to do the lab, set up time, other
teachers' comments, etc.

4. Set up the lab for others to use at your computer station, leave open your

Hey Ms3ers

If you are so excited about MS3 this summer that you cannot wait, here are somethings you can do.

Download itunes on your home computer. We will be using this for class, it will take a while if you have a lot of music on your computer as it will convert any mp3's to a format it can read.
Check out the wiki, maybe even introduce yourself by making a new page and writing about yourself.
Read this blog. I will be updating this on a regular basis with info about the class.
Look at the notes from last year. This will give you an idea of the format I hope to follow this year.
E-mail me with questions. I really have no life. I simply am waiting for you to contact me. It is kind of sad, really.

Expectations for MS3 Teachers

A large part of the frustration last year was that a lot of what was expected was sprung on the teachers. It wasn't anyone's fault, rather a result of the first time through the program, however this year I will attempt to explain everything at the first.

Summer class. The teachers will take a rigorous science content course (physics) in the morning and then participate in a pedagogy class in the afternoon. For this teachers will receive college credit. The grant will supply materials to help the teachers such as probes and calculators. The teachers are expected to take back these materials to improve their classrooms.
The teachers will participate in two on-line classes based on a science text that will be announced later. One will be in the fall and the next will be in the spring. This will involve reading the book, responding to questions and being involved in discussion threads.
The teachers will administer a pre and post test to their students, and encourage other teachers in their building to administer the test. The test will be the science NWEA and be on the computers.
The teachers will participate in two weekend sessions during the year, on in fall the other in spring. Sub days will be covered for missed school. These days will be used to build science kits for the Western Colorado Math and Science Center.
The teachers will participate in a capstone event In June 2009.
The teachers will complete a pre and post test on content area knowledge

Using ipods to View Lectures

We are trying a new system this year. We hope to put Dr. Middleton's lecture notes on to this page for you to preview, view or review. This tutorial will explain how to get the presentation onto you ipod Nano. First click on the thumbnail of the presentation you want.

This will take you to the Authorstream website

Here you have 3 options, download presentation, (looks like a powerpoint icon) download video (looks like a film) or download to itunes, (looks like an ipod). Click on the ipod icon and the computer will launch itunes and download the presentation. The next time you sync your ipod, it will appear as a podcast.

How to Use This Space

This site is acting as a central web location for all the MS3 science grant web resources, kind of a 'one stop shop' for web 2.0. Resources were added to the site form 2007-2008, Environmental Science after that part was over, but I hope that this can be a timely aid to all enrolled in the grant.

Lecture Notes

I have converted all lecture PowerPoint slides to video using AuthorStream, a free application. Then I embedded the video on this site for you to view and download. To do either, simply click on the thumbnail you want.

Del.icio.us

Any web resources we find will be saved to Del.icio.us, a social bookmarking site. You will need to be signed up for this service, but it is free.

Wiki

We will build a wiki as a class that will allow us to collaborate beyond our summer class and into the school year. We will use wikispaces, a wiki site that is free for teachers.
